In this section we explain how the statistical principle of sufficiency can be leveraged in the context of network model estimation. The somewhat surprising result is that these complex ERGMs and STERGMs can be estimated with miminal data requirements: a representative egocentric sample from a network, with retrospective information on tie duration.
